Below is an email received concerning the proposed “boutique” hotel to be built on the Cabana Club site. The link takes you to renderings Legg-Mason has provided.

Thank you for your recent comments regarding the Cabana Club.  We thought the following information may address some of your concerns.  In addition, please find some renderings of the proposed boutique hotel.  These visuals illustrate how the proposed 38 room hotel and restaurant compliment the look and feel of Sand Key.

The new Cabana Club will be significantly lower in height than the surrounding condominium buildings on Sand Key. To clarify, the Cabana Club will be 2 stories shorter than the property to the North and 6 stories shorter than the property to the South.  The Cabana Club property will be operated as the beachfront hotel complimenting an annex use for the main hotel, the Belleview Biltmore, which is poised for a major restoration and redevelopment.  Legg Mason does not plan to amend the application for redevelopment of the Cabana Club site previously submitted to the City to add additional rooms even if the increase in hotel room density now under consideration were to be adopted.   Legg Mason recognizes the site is not eligible for any increased hotel density for the site and intends to proceed with the project as currently designed with 38 rooms.

For additional information about both projects I urge you to go to http://www.belleviewbiltmore.com/renaissance-and-restoration-cabanaclub.shtml where you will find a complete overview of the project.

Thank you and please contact me as we would welcome the opportunity to meet with you or any of your neighbors to discuss the project in detail.

I’d like to comment on the posting by Amy Maguire regarding the Legg Mason “boutique” hotel.

Legg Mason and their representatives continue to publish false information regarding this project. It’s very easy to verify this by just pulling up the link and viewing the drawings. Does this LOOK like it is 6 stories shorter than Dan’s Island to the south or 2 stories shorter than the Cabana Club to the north? NO? It’s because it is NOT!

Current zoning for height on this property is 25′. Legg Mason is asking for an additional 65′ VARIANCE on this height requirement. This is a total of a 90′ high building. The building shows 6 levels of windows in the front - this does not make it a 6 story building.

I have emailed Amy regarding the information that is being published and asked her for explanations regarding the discrepancies what they are claiming and what is actually true and of course, have not heard back from her.

Legg Mason is also asking for variances on side setbacks and on the open space/recreational space on the west side of the structure.

Those of us who are opposed to this are only asking that Legg Mason stay within the CURRENT zoning requirements for this property. We would love to see a new restaurant or spa on the current footprint and at the current height of the existing building.

Please post as a comment on the blog and building a new hotel.

Has anyone been in the Cabana Club recently?
If you have been there you won’t go back! The food is terrible and the place is full of people who are loud and overserved alcohol. If this is a sign of what Legg-Mason is going to build, I for one, dont’ want it.

This is just nothing more than a smoke filled bar with local drunks.

I suggest the City look at what type of operation they are running before granting them permits. It’s not a becoming sight on Sand Key. Rather have the vacant building back.

  3. I would like to also add that Cabana Club has terrible management. We recently stayed at our cousin’s place there and the management was down right rude and racist. They need to learn what customer service means and replace their building manager with someone who knows what they are doing.
