Sand Key Whale

A fisherman trolling for Kingfish spotted this 30 foot sperm whale about a half mile off the beaches of Sand Key. This unusual sighting reminds us that the gulf holds many creatures that continue to surprise and amaze us. This gentle mammal was reported to be heading south over the weekend.

this is so great my family and I have been going to Sand Key for the past 3 yrs and we’ve seen several dolphins diving at different times at sunset but this whale sighting is amazing Do you think there would ever be a shark in the gulf waters??

CAROL FROM PITTSBURGH, ARE YOU NUTS ??? THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF SHARKS OFF THE COASTLINE DAILY 365 DAYS A YEAR. TAKE A HELICOPTER RIDE FOR AN AMAZING AIRIEAL VIEW OF THEM. MOST OF THEM ARE NURSE SHARKS, BUT, THEY DO BITE. SHARKS EXIST IN EVERY OCEAN, GULF, SALT WATER ON THIS PLANET…DO NOT SWIM AT SUNRISE OR SUNSET…THIS IS WHEN THEY ARE CLOSER TO THE SHORELINE, FOLLOWING THE FEEDER FISH….THEY CAN COME INTO AS SHALLOW AS 2 FEET OF WATER IF THEY ARE SMALL ENOUGH…CHECK THE BEACHES ON SAND KEY FOR SHARK TEETH…I HAVE A LARGE JAR FULL OF THEM THAT I PICK UP EVRY TIME I WALK, OR SIT OUT ON THE BEACH. I LIVE ON SAND KEY, AND HAVE EVEN SEEN A DEAD BABY SHARK ON THE BEACH DURING A RED TIDE IN JULY 2005.
