It’s that time of year again. 300 pound lumbering creatures will make their way onto our beaches to lay their eggs. Two or three different species of sea turtles including the Loggerhead, the most common, will dig holes in the sand to incubate their eggs.
Should you see a nest or sea turtle, contact the Clearwater Marine Aquarium at 727-441-1790 ext. 224. The CMA protects and marks the nest to insure the hatchlings make their way back to the gulf. Do not disturb the nests or the prospective mother during their annual visit.
May is one of the best times of the year as many fish, birds and other wildlife begin appearing on and around our island. The sights, sounds and migrations make our seasonal transitions a great part of life on the gulf.
