spanish_mackerelIf it’s silver, fast and around a bait school, the Spanish Mackerel are hitting it. Along the beaches of Sand Key small Spanish are feeding on glass minnows and juvenile threadfin herring. This is a perfect time to take a child to the beach or a mile or two offshore for non-stop action.

Light spinning outfits with a small diamond spoon casted around bait schools will bring plenty of hits. If the fish are aggressive and cut you off, try adding a couple of inches of wire leader. White jigs, spoons and live bait will work also.

Larger Spanish Mackerel can be caught over wrecks and reefs a few miles offshore. Anchoring around the reef and using a chum block will bring the big boys in.

Nothing compares to seeing kids reeling in these speedsters. You may keep a few for a good dinner too! Just bake the filets with skin onĀ for about 15 minutes. Basting with Italian dressing will add flavor. The grill will work also.

Enjoy the fun and this special time of year.
